Irish presidential election: Michael D Higgins ahead

Early indications suggest that Labour's Michael D Higgins is on course to become the ninth President of the Republic of Ireland.

Counting started at 0900 BST on Friday morning.

There are seven candidates for the presidency, including Martin McGuinness who is expected to come third.

BBC Newsline's Noel Thompson and BBC NI political editor Mark Devenport are in Dublin for the election.
