Pope Benedict makes call to International Space Station

Help

Pope Benedict has made the first papal phone call to space, speaking to the 12 astronauts and cosmonauts on board the International Space Station from the Vatican.

He paid tribute to shuttle commander Mark Kelly's wife, Gabrielle Giffords, the US politician shot in the head by a gunman in January.

The pope also asked the space crew several questions, including their views on world peace and science.
