Seve Ballesteros, the five-time golf major winner, has died at the age of 54. How will you remember him?

Ballesteros claimed over 87 titles in his golfing career, winning the British Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988.

He was the first European to win the Augusta Masters in 1980, repeating his victory in 1983.

He enjoyed success in the Ryder Cup as both player and captain, leading Europe to victory over the United States in 1997.

Ballesteros had health problems after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008.

Speaking of his illness, he called his battle against the tumour the "hardest challenge of my life."

What will you remember about Seve Ballesteros? Did you ever meet him or watch him play? How would you describe his contribution to golf? Send us your comments.

The word "gentilhombre" is not often used in Spain, but it does apply to Senor Ballesteros. May he reach par on that great golf course in the sky...

RIP, the supreme "Matador" of the links! I'll never forget standing right behind him during the third round at the 1984 British Open at St. Andrews on the WRONG side of the SECOND hole where he'd driven it from the 16TH TEE, he was behind a gorse bush into the bargain. From there, with true cavalier thrust, he put it on the 16th green with a towering majestic shot. We'll never see his likes again!

Like many others in the posts below, a theme is developing that is not surprising. I always liked this game but Seve pushed many of us to compulsives - thanks Seve (if only you had been around when I was a tad younger). A great striker of the ba' and shot maker, with the true imagination of an artist. A very, very sad day for golfers around the word. Thanks for the fantastic memories. RIP

Imagine the skill of George Best, the charisma of Muhammad Ali, the grace of Bobby Moore and the flair of Vivian Richards - then multiply these attributes ten-fold and place a golf club in the hands of your creation. Let the Spanish sun shine down on him, and call him Severiano Ballesteros.
