Turkey's universities drop Islamic headscarf ban

Help

When Turkish students returned to university in October, they discovered that an official ban on wearing Islamic headscarves had been lifted.

Hundreds of devout Muslim women had previously been barred from some campuses for wearing a scarf.

But the ban was lifted after the governing party said it would back any student disciplined for wearing a headscarf.
