Thaksin Shinawatra 'not rushing back to' Thailand

Exit polls suggest the opposition is on course for victory in Thailand's general election with the sister of the ousted former leader, Thaksin Shinawatra, set to become the first female prime minister.

Thaksin was overthrown in a military coup five years ago and he left the country before a court sentenced him in his absence to two years in prison for corruption.

But the former leader said even if his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, is confirmed as the nation's prime minister, he will not rush back to Thailand.

"I want to see the reconciliation really happen and I want to be part of the solution. I don't want to be part of the problem for reconciliation," he said.

Thaksin said he was settled in Dubai and insisted his sister had the ability to run the country on her own.
