BBC Radio 4 Profiles the Chinese activist Ai Weiwei

Following his detention by the Chinese authorities, Mary Ann Sieghart profiles the outspoken designer of the 'Bird's Nest' Olympics stadium, Ai Weiwei.

Radio 4 speaks to his sister Gao Ge, a friend from his early days on the New York art scene, and a journalist who has written about him extensively and has observed his encounters with the authorities.

The programme profiles him as an artist and activist, and explores the man himself - especially his tense relationship with his father and his mischievous sense of humour.

This edition of Profile was broadcast on Radio 4 on Saturday 9 April 2011 at 1900 BST. You can also download the programme podcast.
