Japan earthquake: Waking up to tsunami devastation
Japan's relief mission is beginning a day after the country was struck by a devastating tsunami.
The 8.9 earthquake triggered a 10m (30ft) tsunami wave which swept across Japan's coastal regions sweeping cars, buildings and ships far inland.
Rescuers began removing people trapped on rooftops of buildings.
The BBC's Roland Buerk reports from Tokyo.
