New Zealand's prime minister says at least 65 people are known to have died after an earthquake struck Christchurch on the country's South Island.

There have been many injuries, and rescuers are trying to free others trapped under rubble.

The quake had a magnitude of 6.3 and caused widespread damage.

Two buses were crushed after they were hit by falling buildings. Power lines have been knocked out and burst pipes have flooded streets.
