Baby koala repeatedly shot in 'sick' attack

Vets are trying to save a baby koala who was repeatedly shot in eastern Australia.

The 16-month-old female, nicknamed Frodo, has undergone two rounds of surgery to remove 4 of 15 shotgun pellets.

Three pellets were successfully removed during the first operation but vets had to stop as the koala's condition became too delicate to continue.

She was found on Friday next to her mother, who died from apparent gunshot wounds.

Queensland State Sustainability Minister Kate Jones condemned the attack as "sick and cruel" and warned that the person responsible could face large fines and a two-year prison term.
