Eighteen people have been killed when the mini lorry they were travelling in crashed into a larger lorry in the Indian state of Punjab, police said.

The victims belonged to two families in Moga district. The lorry driver escaped after the accident, police said.

The accident took place late on Sunday when they were returning from a religious function.

India has the world's highest road toll, with more than 110,000 people killed every year in accidents.

Most are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and ageing vehicles.
