China air zone 'purely for defence', says ambassador

5 January 2014 Last updated at 14:20 GMT

The Chinese ambassador to the UK has told the BBC the air-control zone Beijing set up over a group of disputed islands in the China Sea is "purely for defence".

Other countries, including the US, have said they will not observe the zone and are continuing to fly through it without prior notification.

But Ambassador Liu Xiaoming says China's actions regarding the zone were not a sign of aggression, nor was it intended to be a no-fly zone.
