China is emerging as the potential deal-maker or deal-breaker at this year's UN climate talks taking place in South Africa.
It is widely believed that an effective international plan can only be reached if China agrees to carbon cuts.
However, as the BBC's Martin Patience reports from Beijing, higher living standards in China are putting pressure on the environment.
