Australia election: Tony Abbott defeats Kevin Rudd

Tony Abbott will be the next prime minister of Australia after the conservative coalition he leads won the country's general election.

Mr Abbott claimed victory in front of ecstatic supporters declaring, "Australia is under new management."

Outgoing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd earlier admitted defeat and said he would not stand again for the Labor leadership
