Crowds pack Bangalore train station as they flee ethnic tension

India's Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has appealed for calm as students and migrants workers from the country's north-east continue to flee major cities in the south.

Thousands have already left Bangalore, Chennai and Pune fearing they will be targeted in reprisal for recent ethnic clashes in the northern state of Assam.

Rumours about imminent attacks have spread via text messages and social media.

The Prime Minister said strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of spreading such threats.

The BBC's Yogita Limaye said Bangalore railway station was crowded with people trying to leave, for the third day running.
