Australian billionaire Clive Palmer to build Titanic II

Clive Palmer, one of Australia's richest men, has commissioned a Chinese state-owned company to build a 21st Century version of the Titanic.

The mining billionaire told Australian media that construction would start at the end of next year.

It would be ready to set sail in 2016.

The plan, he added, was for the vessel to be as similar as possible to the original Titanic in design and specifications, but with modern technology.

Mr Palmer told Australian media that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct the ship.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st Century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," he said in a statement.

The announcement comes just weeks after the centenary of the sinking of the ill-fated Titanic.

The vessel, the largest luxury ship in its time, struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. It went down on 15 April 1912, leaving more than 1,500 people dead.

"Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it,'' Mr Palmer said in response to questions from reporters on whether the Titanic replica would sink.

The new vessel is scheduled to sail from London to New York in late 2016, if all goes as planned.

"It is going to be designed so it won't sink,'' he added. ''But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.''

The cost of the construction is not known, a spokesman for Mr Palmer told Australian media.

The mining magnate from Queensland, who has strong business relations with China, has expanded into tourism. He owns a luxury resort on the Sunshine Coast and has plans to build a fleet of luxury liners.

His plan to build the Titanic replica was announced on the same day that he revealed plans, in a separate news conference, to contest the next federal election in Queensland.

He told reporters that he has expressed interest in standing for Queensland's Liberal National Party (LNP), part of the conservative opposition at federal level, in the Brisbane seat of Lilley - currently held by Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan.

    For all the opulence, the bulk of the revenue earned by the big liner companies was the transportation of 3rd class steerage passengers; delivering European immigrants to the New World.
    I wonder if he’ll emulate this part of the story?

    Replica, I doubt it.
    It certainly won't be registered in Liverpool as that will prevent money spinning weddings being conducted.
    If the accomodation is original, without en-suites, it won't appeal to modern travellers and it will have to have more modern lifeboats, which will look nothing like the original.
    With increasing Atlantic wave heights, could it cope with modern seas?

    Are the blue prints in the public domain?

    Surely they are the property of Harland & Wolff and therefore they hold all the cards.

    Personally I think it is all a little in bad taste. 1500 people died on the Titanic, don't forget that. It appears in this modern world we have.

    #195. Titanic did not have enough lifeboats. There was lifeboat space for just over half the people on the ship. Regulations at the time were behind progress which meant that whilst ships were getting much bigger and passenger capacity larger the regulations were not updated to require more lifeboats fitted to these huge steamers.

    With regard to this new Titanic the word naff comes to mind.

    Perhaps, rather than calling it 'Titanic II' he should call it 'Zombie Titanic', it would be just as tasteful and when it does sink (as it inevitibly will what with being built on the cheep by people who have no experience building large metal ships) he can cash in because as it stands James Cameron probably owns the copywrite on a Titanic II movie, but Zombie Titanic may be still be up for grabs.

    Hmm, some rich guy in Australia comes up with a great business idea and he wants it done where the expertise and hard work ethic is. Britain's shipbuilding industry was destroyed in the 60s and 70s by nationalisation and successive strikes, there are no UK shipyards that could build such a vessel nowadays and the hard work ethic has gone. We will need to relearn it someday soon though...

    Interesting, or perhaps even ah, interesting, but since I was once seasick in Southampton harbour with the anchor down - indeed, I can get seasick on damp grass, and even washing my face brings on queasy feelings - somebody else can have my ticket for any voyage this ship makes.

    Harland & Wolf no longer build ships. Many shipping lines chose China to build their Ships because it is cost effective. Frankiecrisp, the Olympic Class Liners have been famous for 100 years. With good reason.

    The rich will spend their money on what they like. At least this will actually produce something rather than a big pile of cash stuffed in an overseas tax avoiding account. I certainly wouldn't want Harland and Wolff to build it but they could always try to submit a bid just as any other shipbuilder might. The steel would probably still have to come from China.

    ...and we blatantly accuse the rich (bankers) in this country for not giving their fair share? Well this is a man doing what he likes with his money. I would have preffered he spent this money towards humanitarian aid, but its his choice as he has paid his taxes, whil he creates jobs for the chineese who he sells raw metals to, so fair game

    I find this news disturbing. Basically, it appears (from the article,) that some billionaire with no real connection to the original ship or its unfortunate occupants has taken it upon himself to re-make the Titanic.

    Not only that, he's decided to give China, yet another unrelated 3rd party, the millions of dollars business. Why was is this not being rebuilt in the UK/Ireland from whence it came?

    Titanic had more than enough lifeboats and life rafts. But they mostly left the ship more than half empty. While some panicked and acted selfishly, many others were apathetic. All very poorly managed.

    Titanic II would, hopefully, not repeat the same mistake of not training people and making everyone aware. Plenty of time for that on a ship out at sea, and can also be part of the fun.
