Members of Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party have refused to take their seats at the opening of Burma's parliament because a row about the oath of office for MPs.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) want to swear to "respect", rather than "safeguard" the constitution, which they say is undemocratic.

Meanwhile, European Union foreign ministers have formally agreed to suspend most sanctions against Burma, but only for a year, in order to recognise a process of democratic reform that is now under way after a half century of military rule.
