A ferry has sunk off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea with around 300 people onboard.

A distress signal was received by Australian authorities and a rescue operation is underway.

Captain Nurur Rahman, of Papua New Guinea's National Maritime Safety Authority, told the BBC that 28 survivors had been picked up by a merchant vessel, but was unable to confirm how many people were onboard the ferry when it sunk.
