Residents help a driver to free his car stuck in a liquefaction sink hole

A series of earthquakes has shaken the New Zealand city of Christchurch, just 10 months after a quake caused huge devastation there. There has been widespread damage to property, but only minor injuries reported. This driver needed help to free his car from a sink hole caused by liquefaction.

Friday's two main quakes were followed by powerful aftershocks all afternoon - the shaking brought terrified residents out of their homes and other buildings.

From the air the scale of the damage caused by liquefaction in the Burwood and New Brighton areas can be seen.

This resident was keen to clear the damage from in front of his house. Liquefaction occurs when soil and sediments lose their strength in response to changes in pressure.

The mud and silt did not stop this motorcyclist.

The earthquakes damaged the banks of the Avon River. The local environmental authority said that sewage had entered the river and residents should avoid contact with river water.
