BBC looks at the life of North Korea's Kim Jong-il
The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il has died. The announcement of his death was read out in an emotional broadcast on state television.
The communist leader had been in power since 1994 but had been unwell in recent years since suffering from a stroke.
One of his sons, Kim Jong-un who is thought to be in his late 20s was named as his father's successor just over a year ago.
