Australia navy commander jailed for spanking
John Alan Jones told his subordinate spanking would teach her discipline
An Australian naval commander has been jailed for 18 months for abusing a female subordinate by spanking her.
A court martial convicted Lt Commander John Alan Jones on seven counts of committing acts of indecency against the woman, including four occasions when he spanked her.
She told the military panel how she still had nightmares about the abuse.
The military judges demoted Jones to lieutenant and said he would be discharged from the navy.
He was told he would spend at least 12 months in jail.
The woman had secretly recorded some of the abuse.
In the recordings, he told her the spanking was for her own good and would teach her obedience.
The abuse took place during 2010 on a ship that they both served on, and at Jones's private residence in Western Australia.
