Borneo bridge collapse toll rises

The accident happened when the bridge was being repaired, official said

At least 11 people are now known to have died and more than 30 remain missing after a bridge collapsed in Indonesia.

The accident happened on Saturday in East Kalimantan on Borneo island.

Officials said a steel cable snapped while the bridge, which resembled the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, was being repaired.

The collapse sent cars, buses and motorcycles into the Mahakam river below.

Some of the victims are believed to be trapped in submerged vehicles.

"It's difficult to know exactly how many are missing because we don't know how many vehicles and people fell when the bridge collapsed," said National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

He said another 39 people had been hurt in the accident.

Witnesses described survivors screaming as they swam to the shore after the bridge gave way.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered an investigation into the accident.

The bridge, 720m long and completed in 2002, is reported to be the longest suspension bridge in Borneo.
