The 20th World Orchid Conference is taking place in Singapore, with some 5,000 varieties of orchid on display.

Representatives from countries around the world are participating in the tri-annual event to show off their skills.

Among the winners was Jersey's Eric Young Orchid Foundation. Their paphiopedilum hybrid "Victoria Village" won this year's Reserve Champion Plant award.

The top prize in the same category went to Taiwan's Cycnodes Taiwan Gold. This orchid also won the trophy for best hybrid.

And the host Singapore did not lag behind - this locally-grown Dendrobium Iasianthera won the Best Species trophy.

This is the second time that Singapore has hosted the World Orchid Conference - the first time was 1963.

And with an orchid called Vanda Miss Joaquim as its national flower, the city state has a passion for orchids.

Some new species have been named for famous people. This is Dendrobium Margaret Thatcher, after the former British prime minister.

At this conference, a new species was dedicated to British singer Sir Elton John. Sitting on its right is another named after the late Princess Diana.
