President Barack Obama has said he wants to strengthen America's military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Addressing the Australian House of Representatives he said "the United States is a Pacific power, and we are here to stay".

He confirmed that more than 2,000 US marines are being deployed to Darwin to monitor potential security challenges posed by China.

The president also said the US was rethinking its priorities in the world now that its presence in Afghanistan and Iraq was winding down.
