Pope Francis in Africa: Background to clashes in CAR

Pope Francis is concluding his first official trip to Africa with a visit to the Central African Republic.

The country is in the midst of conflict, with society divided between enclaves of Christians and Muslims, clashing daily as UN peacekeepers try to keep them apart.

The CAR has been tearing itself apart for decades, but the religious element is a relatively recent phenomenon as Alastair Leithead explains.
