The Sudanese woman whose death sentence for allegedly renouncing Islam sparked worldwide protests, has arrived in Italy with her family.

Meriam Ibrahim was condemned to hang for allegedly leaving Islam and marrying a Christian man.

She was raised by her Christian mother and says she has never been Muslim.

No details have been made public about how she was allowed to leave Sudan, but she was accompanied by the Italian deputy foreign minister.

Italy's Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi was on the tarmac to meet the aircraft when it landed.
