Laura Bush: There's a sorority club among first ladies

3 July 2013 Last updated at 16:26 BST

Laura Bush, a former US first lady, has been in Tanzania to host the African First Ladies' Summit - an event focusing on empowering women across the African continent.

She said all former first ladies were like a "sorority" when they get together.

"We know what it's like to have your husband be president. We have a lot of things that we can talk about that no-one else would really understand."

She was joined at the opening of the summit in Dar es Salaam by US First Lady Michelle Obama.

BBC Africa's Komla Dumor spoke to Mrs Bush on BBC World News.
