Fuel tanker fire in Uganda kills 30 people

1 July 2013 Last updated at 19:07 BST

At least 30 people have died in a fire after a fuel tanker was hit by another vehicle on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Passers-by and road-users, who had crowded around to salvage the spilling fuel, were caught in flames when a fire broke out.

The practice of taking fuel from stricken trucks is not uncommon for fuel imports bound for landlocked Rwanda, Burundi and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

After this accident, the worst of its kind in Uganda in many years, authorities say they need to reinforce the message that taking fuel is potentially deadly.
