Nelson Mandela's campaign to tackle South African poverty

5 December 2013 Last updated at 22:11 GMT

Nelson Mandela will perhaps be remembered as much for his fight for the underprivileged as his fight against white minority rule.

He once famously said that "overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice", and so he lent his support to dozens of care giving organisations.

One of his greatest acts of philanthropy was to donate one third of his presidential salary to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, but his interests remained broad.

They included HIV and Aids, eradicating hunger and promoting local artists.
