Militias train new recruits to fight rebels in Mali

In northern Mali, self-defence militias have been training thousands of people in order to face Islamist rebels.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has recommended conditional backing for a one-year African Union mission against Islamist militants in Mali.

Islamist radicals have imposed strict Sharia in the north after they forced government troops to retreat.
