Decisive move in Egypt power struggle
The armed forces in Egypt have shown no sign so far of challenging the surprise move by the new civilian president, Mohammed Mursi, to replace the head of the army.
Earlier crowds gathered in Tahrir Square in Cairo, shouting that they back his decision to remove Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi from his post.
The BBC's Jeremy Bowen reports from Cairo.
