Sudan mourns singer Mohammed Wardi

Iconic Sudanese singer and songwriter Mohammed Wardi has died.

Wardi brought Nubian music to a much wider audience, and was very popular in different parts of the Horn of Africa.

He is reported to have died of kidney complications in Khartoum, Sudan's capital. His funeral was shown live on national television on Sunday.

Wardi was not shy of voicing strong political opinions, one of the many reasons he was adored.

The BBC's Sudan correspondent James Copnall sent this report to our Network Africa programme.
