Nato has agreed to create a "spearhead" rapid-reaction force with several thousand troops ready to deploy at very short notice.
The move was announced by Nato Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the alliance's conference in Newport, Wales.
Leaders of the alliance are meeting to discuss Iraq, Syria and their response to Russia's alleged involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
