Emma Bonino on spying row: Friends spy on each other

28 October 2013 Last updated at 15:10 GMT

Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino says she was surprised but not shocked by claims the US had been eavesdropping on the telephone calls of European leaders.

She told HARDtalk's Zeinab Badawi that throughout history it had been shown that friends often spied on each other.

Ms Bonino did not believe the conversations of any Italian politicians had been intercepted.

You can watch the full interview on BBC World News on Monday 28 October at 14:30 and 20:30 GMT and on the BBC News Channel at 00:30 on Tuesday 29 October.
