US Gen Dempsey: 'Decade of challenges' in Middle East

2 October 2013 Last updated at 02:41 BST

The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff has told the BBC he expects "a decade of challenges to come" in the Middle East, with Syria at the epicentre.

Speaking to the BBC's Joan Soley while on a trip to South Korea, General Martin Dempsey also rejected recent claims that a plan existed for the US military to train the Syrian rebels.

However, he added that it was a "valid concept".
