Syria welcomes Russian initiative on chemical weapons

9 September 2013 Last updated at 18:48 BST

Russia had urged Syria to have them destroyed to avert US-led military strikes.

Jim Muir told the BBC that Walid Muallem accepted the initiative on state television "out of the Syrian leadership's concern for the safety of its people".
