Suu Kyi leaves Burma after 24 years

It has been 24 years since the Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi last left her homeland and her arrival at Bangkok airport appears to be a milestone in her country's political process.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner had always feared that if she left, the military who run Burma would prevent her returning.

But after a year of change which brought the release of political prisoners and the election of Aung San Suu Kyi herself to parliament, she has decided now is the time to take up long-standing invitations from abroad.
