What could Russia's trip to Syria achieve?

The Russian Foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, is visiting Syria for talks with President Bashar al-Assad.

After the meeting, Syrian media quoted President Bashar al-Assad as saying he was willing to co-operate with "any efforts towards stability".
