Among their countless other duties astronauts aboard the International Space Station are tasked with sharing their spectacular view.

During his five months aboard the station in 2013 Commander Chris Hadfield relished the task and posted hundreds of images on social media.

He also became an internet sensation when he performed David Bowie's Space Oddity while "sitting in a tin can far above the world".

The "singing spaceman" who has written a book "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth" told the BBC's Katty Kay it was his son who encouraged him to use social media.
