Police probe Tata Steel 'critical' injury incident

A joint police and health and safety investigation is continuing into an incident at the Tata Steelworks in Port Talbot where a man was badly injured.

The man, who is believed to have become trapped, was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where his condition remains critical.

Tata said steel production was continuing but "everyone in the works is thinking about their colleague".

A spokesman said: "We are working with the Health and Safety Executive."

No more details of the incident have been given but South Wales Police describe it as "serious".

The ambulance service said it was called to the plant at 16:50 BST.

The Tata spokesman added: "I can confirm there was an incident which affected one individual. He was airlifted to hospital to receive treatment.

"An investigation is taking place. The incident happened on the Port Talbot steelworks site."
