Train line reopens after derailment caused by cow

Emergency services were alerted at around 19:00 BST on Thursday

A railway line in Pembrokeshire that was closed when a train derailed after hitting cows on Thursday has reopened.

Thirty passengers were on the service from Gloucester to Fishguard Harbour when the first car of the train derailed at Welsh Hook.

A bus service was operating between Carmarthen and Fishguard Harbour, but Network Rail said trains started running again on Sunday morning.

The disruption affected passengers catching ferries to and from Ireland.

It is believed the cows entered the railway via a footpath level crossing where repairs had been conducted within the last few weeks.

Nobody was injured but fire crews at the scene said the incident could have been a lot more serious.

Network Rail said it was taking the incident very seriously and an investigation was taking place.
