About 85 people have been evacuated from a supermarket after a blaze described by firefighters as substantial.

Some 60 customers and 25 staff were told to leave the Asda store in Llanelli at 20:15 GMT on Wednesday.

The fire started in a food aisle in the centre of the supermarket.

Chris Margetts of Mid and West Wales Fire Service said he could not say if it was started deliberately and an investigation will be launched.

Crews from Llanelli, Gorseinon, Swansea West, Pontyates and Tumble attended the fire in Murray Street.

One engine remained at the scene on Thursday morning to "monitor the situation".

Mr Margetts said the store's sprinkler system kept the fire in check and "performed exactly as they should have" until crews arrived.

He said the building was structurally sound but there was some smoke damage.

Smoke from the blaze was said to have been affecting neighbouring stores.

The supermarket's CCTV system will be examined and a joint investigation will be carried out by the fire service and Dyfed-Powys Police.
