A grass and gorse fire near the seafront in Porthcawl appears to have been started deliberately, says the fire service.

The blaze sent a large plume of smoke over the seaside town which could be seen from some distance away.

It began on Locks Common opposite the esplanade at lunchtime on Wednesday and spread rapidly.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it has since been put out although they will keep a watch on the area.

At its height, crews from Porthcawl, Bridgend, Cowbridge, Pencoed and Port Talbot tackled the "substantial" blaze which affected two acres of thick gorse.
