Crews tackle 'substantial' grass fire in Porthcawl

Fire at Porthcawl A large pall of smoke can be seen rising above Porthcawl from some distance.

Fire crews are still tackling a "substantial" grass and bracken fire near the seafront in Porthcawl.

The fire on Locks Common opposite the esplanade started at lunchtime and spread rapidly.

A fire service senior officer is managing the incident.

Appliances from Porthcawl, Bridgend, Cowbridge, Pencoed and Port Talbot are tackling it. A 4x4 vehicle is also being used.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it was first alerted to the incident at 13:05 BST.

A large pall of smoke could be seen from some distance.

Jennie Griffiths from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "Update porthcawl: fire involving 2acres of thick gorse well alight. Incident is deep seated + likely to be protracted for 24hrs".

The fire service expects to be at the scene for some time.

Fulmar Road remains closed in both directions between Mallard Way and Windsor Road.
