Police are investigating a fire in a flat in Rhondda Cynon Taf which has left a man in a critical condition.

A man and a woman were rescued by firefighters from the flat above a shop in Ynysybwl at 20:25 BST on Friday.

The man is critically ill at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, but the woman's injuries were not serious.

The scene has been cordoned off by police and witnesses are asked to call 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Three fire crews attended the blaze, and firefighters left the scene at 23:20 BST. South Wales Police were still at the scene on Saturday morning.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and a hazardous area response team were also at the building.
