Woman, 77, dies after M4 lorry crash near Newport

A woman has died after a crash between a car and a lorry which closed a section of the M4 overnight near Newport.

The 77-year-old from Devon was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in the city after the incident at junction 25 (Caerleon) at 23:10 BST on Wednesday.

The M4 was shut westbound between junction 24 at Coldra and junction 26 until 08:00 BST on Thursday.

A 32-year-old man from Bargoed has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Gwent Police say because the lorry involved was being used to work on the road, the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

Traffic was diverted via the A48 southern distributor road until accident investigation work was completed.

Police have appealed for anyone who may have information about the collision to call 101.
