Motorists faced delays of up to an hour in 12 miles of stop-start traffic on the M4 motorway in south Wales during the Friday evening rush hour.

One driver described the jams as "horrific" on the westbound sections, especially around Bridgend.

The delays in several areas have been put down to sheer volume of traffic ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.

There were also reports of three-mile long delays westbound around Newport.

The longest tailbacks of stop-start traffic were on the M4 between junction 37 (Pyle) and junction 43 (Llandarcy) on the westbound carriageway.

The problems had eased by 19:30 BST.

Around Newport, the delays affected westbound traffic from junction 24 (Coldra) to junction 25 (Caerleon Road).
