Canoeist saved by fishing boat crew off Porthcawl

Rescuers RNLI crew return to shore with the man's canoe after the rescue

RNLI rescuers praised the quick response of a fishing boat crew who plucked a capsized canoeist from the sea off Porthcawl in south Wales.

He needed hospital treatment for hypothermia after the incident off Sker Beach on Sunday at 11:40 GMT.

The canoeist was transferred to a RNLI boat and then met by paramedics at the lifeboat station.

"It was a good job the crew spotted the canoeist in the water when they did," said RNLI helmsman Simon Emms.

"If he had been in the freezing water for a few minutes longer, the outcome would have been totally different."
