A main road around Newport which closed after a lorry overturned and shed its load of scrap metal has reopened.

Emergency services were called to the A48 Southern Distributor Road at 0950 BST. No other vehicles were involved.

A stretch between Pont Ebbw roundabout and Maesglas retail park was closed for four hours while the recovery operation was carried out.

Motorists were diverted via Cardiff Road and Docks Way. Gwent Police said the road reopened at 1420 BST.
