Fire damages Aberdare High School in Rhondda Cynon Taf

Firefighters have tackled a blaze at a secondary school in Rhondda Cynon Taf overnight.

Fire crews from Aberdare and Hirwaun were called to Aberdare High School in Trecynon at 03:30 GMT on Monday.

The fire service said the blaze was confined to external cladding in a 80m (262ft) by 30m (98ft) building.

The school building was affected by smoke but was ventilated by the firefighters.

Water jets were used to bring the incident under control in an operation that lasted over an hour. Firefighters also used breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras.

A teacher told BBC Wales the damage is minor and confined to the exterior of the building. The school will be open as normal on Monday.

The school was formerly known as Aberdare Boys' Comprehensive.
