Leanne Wood AM Leanne Wood says she is "considering the situation"

Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood has said she is considering entering her party's leadership race.

She said young party members had taken to the internet to call for her to stand.

A video has recently appeared on YouTube urging Ms Wood to throw her hat in the ring.

She said she would wait for an internal party review to finish before deciding whether to put her name forward.

Speaking on BBC Wales' AMPM programme, Ms Wood said: "I am considering the situation with the leadership.

'Radical direction'

"I know that there are a number of young members of Plaid Cymru running a bit of a Facebook, Twitter and YouTube campaign to trying to persuade me to stand."

Plaid launched an internal review into the future of the party after May's assembly election.

The South Wales Central AM said she would wait for its findings before making up her mind about the leadership.

Some party members were "up for some kind of radical direction," she said.

"I think that the politics of the time is calling for that as well," she added.

"We are in interesting times, I think."

'Exciting time'

She said it was "an exciting time" for the party. Supporters were looking to Scotland - where the SNP triumphed at devolved elections this year - "and seeing major opportunities for Wales in terms of expanding our devolution settlement".

"I'm getting some messages to try to persuade me, but I am trying to weigh it all up at the moment," she added.

Ieuan Wyn Jones announced he would be standing down as Plaid leader after a poor showing by the party at the assembly election. It was pushed into third place by the Conservatives for the first time.

Mr Jones' successor will take the reins on 15 March.

Nominations for the job are open between 3 and 26 January.

In September, Ceredigion AM and former Plaid minister Elin Jones confirmed she will stand for the leadership.
